You can learn many bizarre and semi-interesting facts by watching bad television. One of these facts is that some people belive that we are surrounded by invisible flying creatures called rods. These rods are invisible to the naked eye but can be captured on film. People claim that invisible creatures can move faster than the speed of sound and can grow over fifty feet long! Also since nobody has ever found a corpse of one I imagine that they must either be immortal or dissolve into nothing when they die.

Since rods have only been captured on film and not seen with the naked eye I reckon that they are in fact the blurred images of insects flying past the camera lens. If two or three wing beats of an insect were captured on a single frame of film it would produce the characteristic blurry shape of an elongated body with several wings on either side.

However, in the spirit of UFO sightings everywhere I desgined and rendered some rod creatures. In order to remain invisible they'd have to fly around at great speed all the time. I've coloured my rods green since I reckon they'd have to get a lot of their energy from the sun and be part plant. Also I've made them semi-transparent to help them evade detection by human eyes. I've also added arms to the leading edge of the wings since it would have to be strong in case it hits something when travelling at the speed of sound.

The rod demonstrates my frill macro quite nicely. Also the rod is entirely spline based so all of the objects are placed at positions along a spline. The arms and eyes use the spike macro while the body and wings are tentacle and frills.
